These Homemade Soft Pretzels are golden brown, delightfully chewy, and made with simple pantry ingredients. Whether topped with coarse sea salt, cinnamon sugar, or cheese, they’re the perfect snack, party appetizer, or fast breakfast on the go. Fun to make and even better to eat!

Ingredients

  • 1½ cups warm water (110°F or 45°C)

  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2¼ teaspoons)

  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour (480g), plus more for dusting

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

  • ⅓ cup baking soda (for boiling water bath)

  • 1 large egg yolk + 1 tablespoon water (for egg wash)

  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Optional Toppings:

  • Cinnamon sugar

  • Shredded cheese

  • Garlic and herbs

  • Everything bagel seasoning

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit 5 minutes until foamy.

  • Stir in melted butter and salt. Gradually mix in flour until dough forms.

  • Knead dough on a floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  • Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let rise 1 hour or until doubled.

  • Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a 20-inch rope and shape into pretzels.

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Slowly add baking soda. Boil each pretzel 30 seconds, remove with slotted spoon, and place on baking sheet.

  • Brush each pretzel with egg wash and sprinkle with salt or toppings.

  • Bake 12–15 minutes until golden brown.

  • Let cool slightly and serve warm

Notes

  • For sweet versions, skip the salt topping and toss baked pretzels in cinnamon sugar.

  • Store at room temperature for 1–2 days or freeze for up to 2 months.

  • Reheat in the oven or air fryer to revive that bakery-fresh texture.

  • Swap egg wash for milk or butter if needed.
