These easy Frankenstein cupcakes are the perfect spooky snack craft for Halloween. Made with green frosting, candy eyes, and chocolate sprinkle “hair,” they’re fun to decorate and a hit with kids and party guests alike!

Ingredients

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (or homemade chocolate cupcake batter)
  • Eggs, oil, and water (as required by the cake mix)
  • 1 tub vanilla frosting (or about 1 cup homemade buttercream)
  • Green food coloring
  • Chocolate sprinkles or mini chocolate chips (for “hair”)
  • Candy eyeballs
  • Black decorating gel or edible food marker
  • Optional: Marshmallows or small candies for “bolts”
  • Optional: Chocolate fudge or melted chocolate for scars or extra details

Instructions

  1. Bake the cupcakes: Prepare chocolate cupcakes according to box or recipe instructions. Let cool completely.
  2. Color the frosting: Mix vanilla frosting with green food coloring until you reach your desired Frankenstein hue.
  3. Frost the cupcakes: Use a piping bag or butter knife to apply green frosting smoothly across each cupcake top.
  4. Add hair and eyes: Dip top edges in chocolate sprinkles or mini chips. Add two candy eyes to each cupcake.
  5. Draw features: Use black decorating gel or edible marker to add mouth, eyebrows, and scars. Add bolts using candies or marshmallows if desired.
  6. Chill and serve: Let cupcakes chill for 10–15 minutes to set. Serve or store as needed.

Notes

  • Use buttercream: It holds shape and color better than canned frosting.
  • Cool cupcakes fully: Frosting melts on warm cupcakes.
  • Kid-friendly: Let kids freestyle their monster faces for extra fun.
  • Make-ahead: Bake cupcakes up to 2 days ahead and decorate the day of serving.
  • Use food-safe markers: Great for drawing faces if piping is too tricky.
