Cherry Walnut Cookies, also known as Cherry Snowballs, are festive, buttery holiday cookies with vibrant maraschino cherries and rich walnuts. Perfect for winter baking, cookie swaps, and gift tins, they’re a nostalgic twist on the classic snowball cookie—easy to make and irresistibly delicious.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • ½ cup (60g) powdered sugar, plus more for rolling
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (240g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup (90g) finely chopped walnuts
  • ¾ cup (110g) finely chopped maraschino cherries, blotted dry
  • Optional: ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • Optional: extra cherry pieces for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cream Butter & Sugar: In a large bowl, cream softened butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy. Add vanilla and almond extract (if using); mix well.
  2. Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually mix in flour and salt until a soft dough forms. Fold in chopped walnuts and cherries evenly.
  3. Chill the Dough: Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Shape Cookies: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Roll dough into 1-inch balls. Place 2 inches apart on parchment-lined baking sheets.
  5. Bake: Bake for 13–15 minutes until bottoms are lightly golden. Let cool for 5 minutes.
  6. Roll in Sugar: While warm, roll cookies in powdered sugar. Let cool completely on wire racks, then roll in sugar again.

Notes

  • Be sure to blot cherries dry thoroughly to avoid excess moisture in the dough.
  • Double rolling in powdered sugar gives that perfect snowball finish.
  • Dough can be frozen unbaked—shape, freeze, and bake directly from frozen with 2 extra minutes.
  • Cookies develop more flavor after resting overnight in a sealed container.
