Ingredients

For the Onion Petals:

  • 2 large yellow onions

  • 1 cup (120g) all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

  • 2 eggs

  • 2 tablespoons milk

  • Cooking spray or oil (for baking)

For the Dipping Sauce (Optional):

  • 1/2 cup (120g) mayonnaise

  • 2 tablespoons ketchup

  • 1 teaspoon horseradish

  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika

  • Pinch of garlic powder

Instructions

  • Prep the Onions: Peel onions, cut off both ends, and slice into 8 wedges each. Separate the layers into individual petals and pat them dry.

  • Set Up the Coating Station: In one bowl, whisk together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, beat the eggs with milk.

  • Coat the Onion Petals: Dip each onion petal into the egg mixture, then dredge in the seasoned flour. For extra crunch, repeat the egg and flour step.

  • Arrange and Bake: Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place a wire rack on a baking sheet and coat with cooking spray. Arrange the coated onion petals in a single layer and spray the tops with more oil.

  • Bake: Bake for 18–20 minutes, flipping halfway through if not using a rack, until golden and crispy.

  • Make the Dipping Sauce: While baking, mix all dipping sauce ingredients in a small bowl. Chill until serving.

  • Serve: Serve onion petals warm with dipping sauce on the side.

Notes

  • For crispier onions, double-dip the coating.

  • Don’t overcrowd the pan—leave space between petals for even browning.

  • Use a wire rack on your baking sheet for best results.

  • These are best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the fridge and reheated in the oven.
